"SEE, TABBY. THAT WASNâT so bad, and we had a great time."
"Says who?" We sat on the rooftop eatery that overlooked Broadway. Deb was eating a disgusting display of cheesy nachos, while I picked at my cobb salad, and was filled with nacho envy. "I've never been so humiliated in my whole life."
"The night is young."
"Well, the trolley ride wasnât a complete waste of time. I was able to do some research. The women we took the plunge into degrading hell with answered every question I threw at them. I've never read a romance book in my life, and you know how I feel about men."
"Yes, I do, and it's only because you haven't found Mr. Right yet. But you will. I have confidence." She giggled, and then stuck a greasy finger in her mouth, and licked it off. "Are you sure you don't want some?"
"Fine. I'll use the excuse that I'm on vacation." I moved my salad aside and picked at the plate Deb pushed between us.
"Must I remind you that weâre both on that vacation? Does this mean you'll have another margarita with me?"
"No. Tequila, as you saw last night, isn't good for me." I shoved a few more nachos into my mouth and followed Deb's process of cleaning my fingers. "Perhaps I'll have one tonight while I'm watching you make a fool of yourself."
"Tabitha, I signed you up for the contest, not me."
"I'll stay at the hotel if you force my hand. I think the idea of kissing random strangers is gross and disgusting. You don't know where their mouths have been, especially in this city." I shuddered to emphasize my point.
"I do have standards, Tab. It's a simple, closed-mouth kiss, and the contestants will be screened ahead of time according to your likes." Deb picked up her napkin and cleaned her fingers.
That was my cue that lunch was over. "Since you're the one who filled out the application, then it should be you who's on the receiving end. I'll sit back in my chair, with a saloon-themed margarita and watch."
"Okay, but we are getting souvenir t-shirts from the place. And" She jabbed a finger in my face, "I'm not finished. We are wearing them one night this week."
"Tell me the name of the place again." I signaled the girl who'd been waiting on us for the check and then focused on Deb.
In her twangiest drawl, she replied, "Why, it's The Shuck, 'N Tuck. It's one of the bigger establishments on the main road, and it caters to the girls. Saturdays are double margarita nights. They have every flavor you could possibly imagine, and then some."
"What does that even mean. Not the margarita part, but the name of the joint. When does the show begin?"
"At ten, but the participants, and their plus one, get free drinks thirty minutes before the show. You can be my plus one."
"And that makes no sense. Why would you bring a date or a plus one to a kissing contest?"
"Plus one, I guess you'll have to come along for the ride and find out for yourself.
