Chapter Twenty-Two

Noah

By the time I showered, changed into some athletic pants and a t-shirt, and made my way into the kitchen, Dakota was there, browning ground beef in a skillet. Her hair was damp from her own shower, and she was wearing some loose shorts and a tank top.

I would’ve suggested we shower together, but she’d been acting off, tensing up and skedaddling out of there like the room was on fire. And contrary to what my brothers might’ve thought, I wasn’t stupid. If the woman needed a minute, I’d give her a minute.

I walked up behind her, slipped my arms around her waist, and hugged her back against my chest. She relaxed into the embrace, murmuring a soft hello as I nuzzled her neck.

The weirdness from earlier was gone, and I breathed a sigh of relief. I’d never admit it out loud, but I’d panicked for a moment in the shower. It occurred to me that maybe Dakota had just been curious, that she had an itch she wanted me to scratch, and that was the end of it. That she’d rushed out of my room to put some distance between us and figure out a way to let me know it wouldn’t be happening again.

Now, as we swayed by the stove, our bodies plastered together as she stirred the ground beef sizzling in front of us, I realized I’d been overreacting. I made the woman come five times today. She’d have to be crazy to drop me after that, right?

I released her and moved toward the fridge, shaking my head at myself. Since when did Noah Perry agonize over a woman? I glanced at her as I piled lettuce, tomatoes, and onions onto the counter and began chopping. I knew the answer to that.

I’d been agonizing over Dakota Jones on some level since the moment I first met her.

And now that I’d had her, I wasn’t going to let her go so easily.

When the tacos were done, we ate in companionable silence. There was a lot of moaning on my part at the deliciousness of them, and a lot of grinning and chuckling from Dakota. After we finished eating and cleaned the kitchen together, I took her hand and led her into the living room.

“Want to watch a movie, or something?” I asked.

“Sure,” she said, and I settled into the corner of the couch and pulled her down beside me.

She curled into my side, pulling my arm over her shoulders before tucking her head against my chest. She felt so good there, such a perfect fit, I almost forgot I was supposed to be finding something to watch. I grabbed the remote and logged into my favorite streaming service. I clicked on a romantic comedy and read the description.

“How about this one?” I asked.

“Yeah, that one’s on my list to watch,” she replied, snuggling closer.

I started the movie, set down the remote, and reached over to click off the table lamp, leaving the television as our only source of light in the darkness.
