Liberty Memorial was stunning, though. And why not,
Rob thought. It’s only a year or so old. “I love this place,” Rob
sighed. He almost said “I’ve loved it for years.” Hell, it was in
the bushes beside it that he’d had some of his first gay
experiences.
“You remember it?” Hugh asked, nodding at the colossal
column in the sky.
Rob nodded. “The World War I memorial,” he said
unconsciously.
“World War I?” Hugh asked, and Rob kicked himself
inwardly again. I can’t say anything, he realized.
There was a spider web of telephone-like wires
everywhere, and just as Rob was about to ask about them,
he saw a trolley. Several of them. That’s right! he thought.
KC used to have trolleys!
Union Station was there, gleaming almost as much as
the pillar that was Liberty Memorial. It too was new, maybe
fifteen years, although Rob couldn’t remember just what
Perry had said. That monotonous voice was finally fading
away.
Replaced by Hugh’s. He spared the handsome young
man a long look. So damn good-looking. That smile. God, I
could eat him up.
And how moral would that be? He thought he could
have Hugh in a New York minute. Hugh, deeply closeted,
had probably only looked at other men from afar his whole
life. He had it bad for this “Jimmy.” A man with whom he
never had a chance. If Rob came on to Hugh, it would be a
dream come true for the man.
But it wouldn’t be right. Rob would be taking total
advantage of him. As much as he wanted Hugh, he couldn’t
do it. He’d not only betray Hugh by doing it, but himself, as
well. Because as they drove along, a lovely breeze in their
faces, Rob could see it clearly.
