CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO

“We’re done here.” I gave the slightest flick of my gun, gesturing for Henry toward the door.

He plastered that smug salesman’s smile I’d grown to fucking hate onto his face. “You think I really believe you’re going to use that thing on me? Kind of negate your advantage, bro.”

“I don’t give a fuck what you believe,” I snarled. I thought I had been calm. Crisp and cool. I wasn’t. Rage bubbled to the core of my being. “But if you think I don’t have the stones, then know my buddy over there? He won’t even think twice.”

“Just give me an excuse,” Covington practically purred, his pistol unwaveringly up and pointed right at Henry’s head. “Any excuse.”

The smile on Henry’s face didn’t change an iota, but somehow, it became a little more forced.

“Captain,” I addressed the senior officer, who was confused as hell. He had two sets of people, each with high-leve clearance, having a major disagreement in his ops room, and he didn’t have a damn clue what to do about it. “We’re gonna need a ride back to Citadel. Can you oblige?”

“Listen, I don’t have a clue what’s going on here.” He held up his hands as if surrendering. “So, if it’s all the same with you, I need to push this up the food chain.”

“Is Sato high enough for you?”

“He sounds it to me,” Henry grinned.

God, I wanted to pistol whip the smug look off his face.

The captain walked to holographic console of the comms display and tapped at it. His motions went from normal to inquisitive. Then he irritably tapped it again. He darted a look at me. “You’re jamming us?”

I shook my head. “Not us.”

“Murdock, we need to leave.” Covington stared up at the tactical board. A topographical representation filled the screen. A light pulsed near the docks, a label stating V 1-1.

Vulture 1-1. The callsign of Scorpius’s assault shuttle. By a tiny amount, it twitched closer to Lottie. It was headed our way. And getting faster. It had less than four clicks to cover, and that wouldn’t take long for an assault shuttle.

But that wasn’t the worst news. Another icon crept onto the screen, this one labeled SCORP.

“Yeah. Good idea,” I murmured, then spoke up. “Captain, we need a ride out of here. A Foxhound, if you’ve got one.”

He looked at us confusedly, then almost visibly gave up. “In the motor pool. Take your pick.”

“Then let’s move. Henry, you’re coming with us.”

“It’s not happening, Ant,” my brother said. “Mr. Sullivan?”

The bodyguard stepped forward, his movements almost fluid, closing on Covington.

The Marine responded quickly, grabbing Henry and pulling him close. His pistol grinding in under my brother’s arm.

“Alfie, no,” I tried. Maybe he’d listen to me. Maybe he wouldn’t. The only thing I was vaguely sure of was that he wouldn’t hurt me.

I hoped.

“Listen,” I continued, my words coming out faster. Covington slinked behind a console, making his way awkwardly toward the door. I interposed myself. I’d seen Sullivan move faster than this. Hell, he could cross the room in the blink of an eye aided by his augmented muscles.
