“Vince!” I heard a shout from behind me. “It’s Hans! He’s coming around and wants to talk to you!” I spun around to see Sailor Bob run in my direction.

Bob grabbed me by the shoulder and we both ran back to where the bier lay on the ground. Hans was still a mass of blood and bandages, but he stirred and looked up at me as I arrived. I dropped to one knee to talk to him.

“I think it’s about over,” he coughed to me. “I’m surprised I lasted this long after they found the cave. I see they took out The Wolf Queen’s fortress too. Did she escape?” Hans grabbed my hand with what was left of his.

“She and the wolves made it out before the shell hit,” I told him. “Camilla warned us this would happen and we made it down the volcano before they took struck.” I struggled with my horror as I watched him die, although I knew we were merely ghosts in the damn machine.

“What about the rest of your team?” he asked, while his hand trembled in mine.

“We made it down the volcano. Pat hurt her arm when a tree limb fell, but she’ll be fine.” I could tell he was relieved when he heard this news.

“Glad to hear they all survived,” he told me. “I don’t know how much longer I can hold out. I think they may have found a way around Camilla’s block. Did I ever tell you I taught her how to write code?”

I shook my head. “No, you didn’t, Hans. Are you telling me she created this block to the other side with what she learned from you?”

“What do you think?” he told me. “I couldn’t be there for her.” Hans slipped in and out; I could tell he wouldn’t last much longer.

“Vince,” he gasped again, “you need to know something. It’s important if you want to stop the people behind this thing.”

I leaned closer.

“Are you listening?” he asked me. “I can’t see very well.”

“I’m here, Hans,” I told him.

“You’ve been inside the virtual world since the moment you arrived on Wolf Mountain,” he told me. “You’ve never left it.”

“What are you trying to say?” I asked him. This was insane.

“The whole ruse of Heath trying to hire you for the second company, the merger of Sandstone Gems and Ruby Realizations, you trips back home to your apartment, it’s all faked. You never left the VR network.”

I backed up. “How could they simulate my apartment and everything I know so well?” I demanded. “Hans, this is nuts. What happened to you? I met you at the rest home. Are you telling me nothing has been real since I went into that first VR chamber?”

“My body no longer exists,” he told me. “I was dead long before you met the simulated me in the rest home. I uploaded my consciousness to this VR world before they ever thought about using you to test it out. The only reason they’ve had to keep you inside it is because of what I’ve managed to do.
