Chapter 7

Dust rose from the tires of the oversized motor coach as it left the parking lot by the dock. Annie took Jesse’s outstretched hand as he helped her back on the seaplane. He closed the door of the passenger side and then climbed in and turned to her. “Alone at last,” he mentioned with a raised brow. He lifted her delicate hand to his mouth and placed a slow, soft kiss on the inside. She cupped his cheek, holding her hand there, enjoying the feel of his whiskers against her skin.

“It’s been quite the day, hasn’t it?” she answered.

“It’s not over yet. Let’s go to my place.”

“What about-”

He shrugged and started the engine, flipping switches to ignite the loud colossal noise of the engine turning and drowning out her words. The plane began its slow move on the water. Jesse’s hand fingered the accelerator, pushing it forward a little at a time as it began its slow rise to be in the air again.

It was getting easier with each flight, but Annie’s stomach still rolled each time. Jesse shoved his cell phone at her then put his hand back on the lever. “Text Josh,” he told her above the roar of the engines. “Let him know we’re taking another route and stopping at my place. Tell him to inform the others so they don’t worry.”

Annie nodded. It would be good to keep in contact with the rest so they didn’t think something bad happened. To know someone would be concerned for her put a soft smile on her face. She scrolled through the names until she found Josh’s. “This is Annie. Jesse is flying and we r taking the long way back. Do not, I repeat, do not disturb!”

She giggled.

“Angel, what are you texting?” His smile was warm and intoxicating. Annie sighed. She felt a bit shy as if she were going on a first date. A text came back in.

“Danny said not to delay the data. It’s imperative to get it to the right hands.” She read it aloud to Jesse, who flinched.

“Tell him they can wait one more day. This is too important.” He reached out to Annie and cupped her chin in his hand. “You are more important than anything. Including what’s on the flash drive.”

“I don’t want to think about that right now,” she decided. All she wanted to do is get lost in Jesse’s arms and forget about the last few years.

“Tell them, or else they will send out the hounds to hunt us down. Josh has a lot of pull and they know where I live. Unless you want to see helicopters circling above us, text him. I want complete and total privacy with you for the next few hours.”

Annie blushed at his words and texted Josh. “If anyone bothers us, I will disappear again, with the much loved information everyone seems to want so bad.” She hit send and stared at the face of the phone until it flashed. “Done.”

It wasn’t long before Josh sent a return message.
