Later, downstairs, Connor looked thoughtfully out the front window when he saw movement by the pond. Harry joined him.

“How’s Charlie?”

“A little calmer but no happier. I’m glad he shared his story with you and Laura. It was quite a burden for him.”

Connor nodded, as they both stared at a wiggling snowman who was now standing on the pond but slipped and fell almost immediately afterwards. His twiggy legs with their skates were pointed at the sky.

“Boy, you better stabilize that snowman better,” Harry advised. “Strong winds up here.”

But Connor went out to look because he saw more than Harry had, and could have sworn the snowman was waving its arms. He put the snowman back on his foundation above the pond and returned to the house, saying nothing further to anyone. Until later in the day, he cornered Laura in the great room where she was loading their presents for the Kovacs boys under the tree and announced in a low voice, “Isabella is definitely here.”
