This enlightened CEO also models the message for his staff. “We don’t require any of our team here to have BlackBerrys and be connected all the time. We believe that they work hard when they’re in the office. They should be reachable in case it’s an emergency, but there’s no expectation that people are checking their email throughout the evenings and on weekends and on holidays.” He’s also a self-aware realist: “If I have my BlackBerry in my pocket, I think it’s just the way I’m wired. I will check it constantly if I have it, and that’s what I used to do. The transition was easy in the sense that there’s kinda only one way to do it really, sort of cold turkey. It was actually quite liberating. I had no withdrawal whatsoever.”
If the very idea of controlling the electronic leash that’s been running your life makes you break out in a cold sweat, take heart. For most people, this isn’t quite as bad as going through detox, although the benefits might be just as profound.
Communication is a great thing. Over-communication is a curse.
Use your toys wisely, and encourage others to do the same.
