Chapter Sixteen

Jed drove back to Lie Low, slamming the stick through the gears as if it was the car’s fault that he’d had to leave Tamara half naked and wanting, while he went to attend to more problems caused by that bastard, James Cochrane. Reaching the lane up to Lie Low he stamped on the brake, slewed his car across the road and set off on foot up the grass verge at an irritated lope, peeling off into the spinney where the dusk was rendered almost dark by the canopy of leaves.

He stopped. Listened. Stepped slowly in the shadows. Paused, listened. Paused, listened. Heard a low peep, like a bird setting out on its nightly hunt. Moving towards it, he placed his feet as carefully as a cat across the carpet of leaves and pine needles. Halted. Waiting.

Then the shape of a man detached himself from a shadow and became Manny. ‘Think we’ve missed him. I heard a car start up on the main road a couple of minutes before you turned up. Fucking nearly impossible to move silently through this terrain.’

Jed stared around, trying to pierce the gloom. ‘What are we supposed to do if we get hold of him? The spinney’s not Mr H’s property and wandering around it on a summer’s evening isn’t a crime.’

‘Mr H wanted us to have a word.’

Jed turned back towards where he’d left his car. ‘I don’t see what good that would do. Probably wind him up and make him more determined.’

‘Yeah. But the boss is a frightened man, isn’t he?’ Manny snapped. ‘I don’t want Cochrane round here, either, hanging around where he’s not wanted.’

By the time Jed had retrieved his car and driven up to the house, Manny and Mr H were in Manny’s office checking security footage. Manny was dressed in black jeans and a long-sleeved T-shirt. Mr H’s hair was slicked straight back from a forehead that wore a frown above his glasses.

Jed joined them at the PC dedicated to the CCTV. ‘Have you located him on camera?’

Manny scrolled back through shots and time frames, his jaw set. ‘There. That’s him, isn’t it?’ He pointed at the screen and a shadow bearing a pale human face. ‘Prowling around the fence triggered the motion sensor cameras. I gave him some room by going over the fence further along, but he took off.’

Jed zoomed in on the watchful features of James Cochrane, Mr H’s nemesis. ‘That’s him. Wonder what he’s up to? According to Imelda he’s working all his shifts and keeping his nose clean at Grand Manor.’ He glanced at Mr H, whose pallor illustrated that he was letting this uninvited visitor shake his composure. ‘Is Emilia aware …?’

His employer shook his head. ‘No. I don’t know whether I should tell her or if I’d be stirring everything up for no good reason. She seems reasonably settled here.’

Neither Jed nor Manny returned an opinion. Mr H was the boss. If his wishes were that Emilia wasn’t told that James Cochrane was skulking about, she wouldn’t be told.
