Cheerleading ranks astronomically high on the injury meter. Data released in 2008 from a twenty-five-year study by the National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research at the University of North Carolina shows that cheerleading accounts for nearlyseven of every ten “catastrophic” injuries among high school and college female athletes. The numbers have increased as the sport has continued to become more popular. According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), about twenty-five thousand cheerleaders are sent to emergency rooms each year, a number that has risen more than 600 percent over the past twenty years. The only answer, one researcher noted, is to put in place safety regulations as stringent as those for other contact sports.

… to shoot some hoops?

If you think football is our most hazardous sport, think again. Except for concussions, in which football clearly leads the leagues, the sport that sends most Americans to the emergency room is basketball. More than five hundred thousand players made the trip in 2005. That’s about 25 percent more than the four hundred thousand laid low by football.

… to hunt and shoot?

For you and your hunting buddies, it’s safe so long as you follow all the rules. Primary among them is the need to positively identify the target before pulling the trigger or letting an arrow fly. Unfortunately, this simple stratagem appears to escape many American hunters who every year fatally wound dozens of other hunters, by-standers, and even themselves.173
