Chapter 25

Sarah walked up the high street in Bodmin feeling at home. Whilst her woodland hideaway proved a tonic, it was only when walking from shop to shop that Sarah realised how much she’d missed being in a town. Despite being much smaller than her hometown, Bodmin was full of life. Their arrival into the town had coincided with school kicking out time, and gaggles of teenagers milled around the streets, while harassed mothers gave in to small children demanding after-school treats.

‘Did you get what you needed?’ asked Felix as Sarah emerged from the pharmacy.

‘Yes,’ said Sarah, holding aloft a bag of toiletries.

‘We’ve got half an hour before we meet the others. Is there anywhere else you need to go?’

‘I’d just like to wander around for a bit if that’s OK with you? I didn’t get to see much of the town the last time I was here.’

‘No problem. Tell you what, how do you feel about the prospect of another hill?’

Sarah groaned, remembering the miles she’d hiked only that morning. She was about to complain, then remembered being likened to a holly leaf and faked positivity, even if she wasn’t feeling it. ‘Nothing I’d like more,’ she said, taking Felix by surprise.

‘Town life seems to suit you,’ said Felix. ‘I’ve never seen you so cheerful.’

‘Not so holly-like now, am I?’ said Sarah, smiling.

‘Come on, this way.’

Felix led Sarah past a grand square dominated by an even grander building. ‘They’re the old courtrooms,’ said Felix. ‘Tourist information’s in there now.’

‘You grew up in the town?’

‘No, but I’ve lived here long enough to get a feel for the place. Come on, this way.’ They climbed a flight of steps beside another grand old building. ‘That’s a cinema now. We should come and watch a film sometime.’

‘Maybe,’ said Sarah, blushing and turning her head away from him. Don’t be stupid, she told herself. Someone like him wouldn’t be asking someone like you on a date.

Sarah followed Felix through a car park until they found themselves in woodland. ‘You’ve brought me to some woods? Don’t you think we have enough of trees already?’

‘It’s a means to an end,’ said Felix, climbing a steep path edged by crumbling stone walls and dense trees. They emerged from the woodland onto a narrow road, flanked by small terraced houses. ‘Almost there,’ he said.

‘You weren’t wrong when you said there’d be a hill,’ said Sarah, catching her breath. ‘How much further?’

‘Five minutes at the most.’

‘OK.’

They carried on until they came to a small car park. Dog walkers stood chatting beside cars, their furry companions sniffing each other and barking with impatience. Several people said hello as they passed, and Felix returned the sentiment.

‘Wow, what is this place?’ asked Sarah, as they emerged onto a large patch of grass surrounded by gorse and trees. A large stone monument dominated the top of the hill.

‘It’s the local nature reserve, local being the operative word. Most people who visit the town don’t know about this place despite its proximity to the town centre.
