ARE ENVIRONMENTAL TOXINS THROWING YOUR INSULIN OUT OF BALANCE?

Fascinating new information has recently come to light about the connection between environmental toxins and insulin resistance. According to a 2007 study of insulin resistance in nondiabetic adults published in Diabetes Care, “These findings suggest that persistent organic pollutants (POPS) may be associated with Type 2 diabetes risk by increasing insulin resistance, and POPS may interact with obesity to increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes.” A study in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences also linked POPS (a.k.a. pesticides) and other environmental toxins with insulin resistance.

Yet another study found a connection between environmental toxins and diabetes. People who are overweight and obese have generally been recognized as being at risk for diabetes. But now it turns out that the weight itself is not the issue—exposure to POPS is the key factor determining whether overweight or obese people will become diabetic. Those with a higher toxic burden were found to be at far higher risk than their less burdened but still overweight counterparts.

Obesity and insulin resistance have also been linked to the common herbicide known as Atrazine. Meanwhile, according to a 2008 study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), diabetes has been connected with BPA. Another JAMA article linked BPA with “avoidable mortality” in the adult population.

These reports are just the tip of the iceberg of new research on the health impacts of toxicity, showing me just how big the problem is. What I know from the science and from my patients’ stories is that we have a problem. It’s up to you to decide what you’re willing to do to decrease your body burden. The good news is that it’s possible! My 28-day plan—including organic food and filtered water as much as possible—can begin to combat these environmental stressors.
