We endured a great many hardships on the journey from Cuatro Brazos (La Tora) to this new kingdom, as much from having to slash new paths through the mountains and hills, as from hunger and sickness. And we arrived in this kingdom naked and barefoot, burdened by the weight of our own weapons, all of which caused the deaths of large numbers of Spaniards. In fact, so many died that by the time we reached this kingdom, we were no more than 165 Spaniards.
