Mary – a Natural Contemplative

Mary, the mother of Jesus, carried the Word of God inside her. She was a natural contemplative, who ‘treasured’ God’s words to her and ‘pondered them in her heart’ (Luke 2:19). Her full attention was focused on God and what he was calling her to do. We have much to learn from Mary whose humble obedience and attentiveness to God changed the course of history.

Spend some time now reflecting on Mary’s song:

My soul glorifies the Lord

and my spirit rejoices in God my Saviour,

for he has been mindful

of the humble state of his servant.

From now on all generations will call me blessed,

for the Mighty One has done great things for me –

holy is his name. (Luke 1:46–49)
