Psi fire burned until extinguished by its architect, and Nero didnât find himself in the mood. Wrathfully he stalked through the smoking ruin of the neptunium ore freighterâsluggish flames still flickering twelve clicks laterâwith cloak billowing in his wake.
Positively enjoying the way those swaggering Mogadon machos fell over their own big feet scrambling to stay out of his way.
Let them fear me. Let them regret they didnât finish the job and wipe us all out years ago. For five piddling creds Iâd blow this entire Mogadon planet sky high, along with the Mogadon scientists and the Mogadon fleet and the whole Mogadon race.
Including Dex.
If the genocidal Draven biowar against his whole race werenât reason enough to be wrathful, he was still reeling under the revelation that his boyhood best friend had apparently just consummated all that sizzling chemistry that simmered between Dex and Kaia.
Neroâs own lifemate.
A development Dex had to know couldnât fail to capture Neroâs complete telepathic attention from anything less than a parsec away.
Never mind the long-lamented truth that Kaia had never let Nero properly consummate their own consuming passion way back when. Or the irrefutable fact that sheâd rather make love with a rabid sand-runner these days than welcome Nero to her bed. Or even the fact that Nero himself was no more free to take a hybrid consort now than heâd ever been.
The fact that she and Dex were getting physicalâwithout Neroâwas more than sufficient to trigger his foul temper.
Well, why not admit itâat least to himself? He was jealous. He was jealous as all seven hells.
He was jealous of them both.
Before him heaved the pitch of ungodly turmoil Dex could command so effortlessly. His praetorian guard swarmed around a Sirocco-class shuttle, performing security checks and loading crates of Tombola gear onto the transport slated to ferry them all up to the Inevitable for the auctionâs ceremonial launch.
Except he sniffed out no whiff of the top dog himself.
And he glimpsed no sign of his lifemate.
Tugged by the pull of instinct heâd learned never to ignore, Nero prowled past the Sirocco to the hangar bayâs darker, more remote regions. The nether regions.
Where he found the sleek, custom-built Hurricane fueling quietly near a utility hatch.
He pivoted toward the hatch a breath before it swung open and Dex climbed into view. Bristling with vigilance and tightly leashed violence.
Despite ten years spent carefully forgetting the way heâd felt about Dex and eight years hating him for the biowar, Nero felt his chest tighten and his cock heat.
Because Dex was a devil in his black dress uniform, with hair sternly tamed, ceremonial saber belted at his waist, a double row of platinum buttons edging broad shoulders and narrow hips, and those gleaming boots encasing the muscled length of his legs.
When Dex looked like that, every other guy in the galaxy paled to invisibility. Without even trying, he made the air around him combust with electrical energy.
Same as always.
While Nero watched from the shadows, diligently reinforcing every brick in his psychic stockade, Dex sliced a hard, wary look across the hangar bay, then pivoted to extend a hand for Kaia.
