It was going into their third day of escape, and Jordan still couldn’t understand why no one had bothered to come after them. The Taurans had to be furious by their gall in slipping through their defenses and killing their commander. The Zoldarians were a whole other matter to be reckoned with, so between the two factions, it made no sense that they weren’t being chased.

No one aboard believed for a minute that there wouldn’t be an encounter at some point, which made the waiting all the worse. As Jodie had so aptly put it, “I wish they’d just bring on the fight and get it over with.” The whole crew felt the same.

Jordan was at least feeling better after being tortured, which he mainly attributed to some rest, three square meals a day, and the advantages of being aboard a medical ship. Elise seemed to be doing better also, although her meals were sparse, and she talked little. Robbie was doing a good job of being her doctor, and of course, she had one benefit that Jordan didn’t have on Taurus: painkillers.

Jordan had been pushing the engines at maximum in order to put as much space between them and their adversaries as he could. Two hours ago, he had to back them down in order to keep the reactor temperature in check. It was a good time to do it anyway, as they were now at the edge of the Milky Way, and the planets became dense. Orias was on autopilot to navigate the sea of stars. Once again, the ship was bobbing and weaving to avoid a collision.

There were so many stars in this quadrant of the galaxy that the interior of the ship was twice as bright as usual. Jordan, Celia, Robbie, and Jodie sat around the coffee table on the main deck, picking at a plate of antipasto and sharing a bottle of chardonnay as they reminisced about times when the kids were growing up. It was a nice distraction to staring out the front windshield for opponents.

They had owned a Great Dane that everybody loved. The dog was loyal and good-natured but protective when it needed to be, as Celia explained. The dog was all black except for a white star that was on its chest. The Dane stood at about three and a half feet tall and had a slim physique. Its only fault was that it slobbered constantly. Celia spent time every day walking around the house and cleaning the slimy secretions off walls and counters.

One day, Celia and Jordan were sitting at the bar counter, which separated the kitchen from the dining room, talking to two of their kids, Alex and Kelsey. It was a hot summer day, and Alex didn’t have a shirt on as they talked about something that happened that day. Subconsciously, they heard the dog shake its head, which meant slobber was incoming. The incoming landed with a huge splat in the middle of Alex’s bare back, and he pushed his chest out as if he had just been stabbed.
