Maya’s dad was still in the hospital. It had been five weeks now, and the doctors kept telling her he’d be coming home in the next couple. Every time she heard them say it, she believed it less and less. Even the thread of optimistic hope running through her began to run out of spool.

She stopped into see him one night, and he slept through her entire visit. She noticed two new IV bags hanging from the tree beside the bed. He looked old, wrinkled. He looked like death. Part of her was glad he stayed asleep. Part of her felt guilty about being glad.

She stayed maybe an hour, watching his shallow breathing and looking at his fragile face and neck, trying to remember how he looked before. She almost found it impossible. He wasn’t even dead yet, and already she was losing him. Finally she wrote him a note in lipstick:Dear Dad,

Dropped by but you were sleeping so soundly

I didn’t want to wake you. Will come back

tomorrow or the next day.

Can’t wait for you to come home!
