No amount of description can prepare you for its great playfulness or do justice to its exquisite delicacy and proportions. It is also Spain’s most visited monument. Proclaimed one of the unofficial wonders of the world, it is the epitome of Islamic imagination and artistry, the consummate expression of a sophisticated culture. Its pleasing splendour resides not in the architectural structures themselves, but in the masterful ornamentation that makes them seem almost an apparition, in the intricate delicacy of its carved wooden ceilings, the lace-like reliefs of its plaster walls, the repeated motifs of interlaced arabesques and the finely perforated tracery of the arched arcades on slender columns of white marble.
