The Great Forest

The name Landes is synonymous with the great forest in the north of the département, covering a million hectares (2½ million acres) of mainly maritime pines – a tree natural to the landscape – which was planted in the 19th century to the order of Napoleon III. Even the dunes protecting the forest from the ocean are largely man-made. The forest today is the basis of an industry producing more than 9 million cubic metres (320 million cubic ft) of wood a year. A large part of this area is covered by the Parc Naturel Régional des Landes de Gascogne ‚ [map] .
