Sými

Despite being infertile and waterless, the small island of Sými q [map] was one of the wealthiest in the Aegean from the 1880s until 1910, prospering from shipbuilding, maritime trading and sponge diving. The shipyard owners, captains and tradesmen built fine mansions and ornate churches. However, the island’s fortunes changed when the arrival of steam-powered ships coincided with new Italian restrictions on sponge-gathering. Soon Sými’s streets fell silent as most of the workforce emigrated to the US and Australia, leaving the island’s grand buildings gradually to crumble away. However, beginning in the early 1980s, foreign connoisseurs and rich Athenians fell in love with this picturesque backwater and snapped up the decaying mansions for restoration as second homes. Like Rhodes Old Town, Sými is protected by the state archaeological service, which ensures that all renovations are done in accordance with traditional architecture and materials.
