ABERDARON

Three miles (5km) farther west the attractive little fishing village of Aberdaron 7 [map] nestles in a fold at the back of its cliff-girt bay, sheltered from all winds but the south. In good weather there are boat trips to Bardsey Island. The final resting place for 14th-century pilgrims en route for Bardsey was Aberdaron’s Y-Gegin-Fawr (The Big Kitchen) near the old hump-backed bridge; it is now a café. Run by the National Trust, the Porth y Swnt visitor centre (open all year) next to the bridge has information on things to see and do in the area. Recently constructed sea defences reveal Aberdaron’s vulnerability to marine erosion. Note how the Norman doorway of St Hywyn’s Church has been weathered by centuries of storms. When built some 500 years ago, it was set back at a safe distance from the shore, but now its cemetery rises incongruously from the beach and the building only survives thanks to the provision of its own sea wall.
