The delightful walk through the 28-acre (11-hectare) landscape garden, which has undergone significant restoration work in recent years to return it as far as possible to its original condition, takes in splendid views of Bath with the highlight being a Palladian bridge, one of only four in the world. If you take a close look at the bridge, you can see graffiti carved into the stone, some of it dating from the late 18th century. The grounds, which were designed by the famous landscape gardener Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown and the poet Alexander Pope, also include a lake, an ice house and a summer house, reconstructed in 2004 from a photograph of 1912. There is an on-going programme of events, including outdoor theatre, both for adults and children, family activities, trails and a variety of wildlife to spot. The Rotten Trail is particularly fun, where you can learn all about the world of decay and decomposition, and the bugs and fungi that live in the created ecosystem.

From Prior Park, you can return to the city centre via the same route, content in the knowledge that it’s downhill all the way.
