Beyond Raufarhöfn, the northernmost part of mainland Iceland, Hraunhafnartangi 7 [map] , is marked by a lighthouse – the Arctic Circle lies just 2.5km (1.5 miles) offshore.

On the other side of Melrakkaslétta, Kópasker 8 [map] , with a population of 120, is another wind-blasted town, unrecognisable from its herring-boom days. Today its biggest business is Fjallalamb, a lamb-processing factory with 20-odd full-time employees. In the village school, the Earthquake Centre (June–Aug daily 1–5pm; free) is an exhibition about local eruptions and seismic shake-ups, such as the 1976 quake that created two nearby lakes. At the edge of the village, a host of creepy scarecrows bids you adieu.
