St James’s Church

Continue over Ezelbrug (Donkey Bridge) and follow the road round to the right. Just after the bend, but entered via its west door, is St James’s Church 7 [map] (Sint-Jacobskerk; daily 2–5pm), once the richest parish church in Bruges. Built from 1220, the church grew in the 15th century thanks to generous donations from its wealthy parishioners: the Burgundian court and other merchants and courtiers. Little of its medieval character is visible today, as the interior is dominated by Baroque features added in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. However, each of the 18 altars was sponsored by a trade guild or corporation; note Lancelot Blondeel’s 1523 altarpiece for the Surgeons’ and Barbers’ Corporation.

Return to Sint-Jakobsstraat and head south back to Eiermarkt. On the way, drop in at one of two refreshment options, Café de Republiek or In Den Wittenkop , see 1 and 2 .

The arty café of the Cultuurhuis de Republiek (which includes the Lumière art-house cinema) has a large interior courtyard and does fresh food prepared up to 11pm.

Lined with retro advertising panels, this bistro does French fare and Belgian standards such as waterzooï – made with langoustines rather than white fish or chicken. Lovely terrace to the rear.
