Once considered the garment factory of the world, Chinese designers are finally gaining a global reputation for ‘Created in China’ style. Local boutique Dong Liang has a sharp eye for emerging Chinese fashion labels and indie designers and is the place to go to scope out the cutting edge of Chinese fashion talent. The multi-brand concept store has two standalone boutiques and an outlet shop in Shanghai – all within strolling distance of each other. Its newest store is the most beautiful yet (No. 2, Lane 764 Changle Road; tel: 6428 5320; http://en.dongliangchina.com ; [map] D4). The converted heritage terrace house features five inventively themed galleries, each showcasing a different Chinese designer, including Uma Wang, Boundless and Nicole Zhang. Enjoy an excellent barista brew in the sunny ground-floor cafe while browsing hip accessories and indie magazines. The Crow House by Dong Liang (Bldg 1, 888 Changle Road; tel: 6215 7855; [map] D4) is a small outlet beneath the company office selling out-of-season pieces at slightly discounted prices.

Stylish hommes should check out the young Shanghai-New York label, S2VS (172 Nanchang Road; [map] G4). Indonesian-born Sean William Salim creates preppy New York-style looks with sharp tailoring and fine attention to detail. His wallet-friendly designs are being snapped up by boutiques around the globe, but his tiny flagship boutique can be found in the front garden of a French Concession villa right here in Shanghai.

For handbag hounds, local label Heirloom (78 Xinle Road; [map] E4) creates classic totes (approx RMB2,700), purses and clutches with top-quality leather in stunning shades, and offers a name engraving service.
