Catch a concert, an accordion fest or a cheeky drag show in the old music halls of Pigalle

Montmartre’s past as a place for weekend entertainment lives on in a string of fanciful concert halls amid the peep shows and souvenir stalls of boulevard Rochechouart. L’Elysée Montmartre (No. 72; www.elysee-montmartre.com ), opened in 1807, is said to have seen the birth of the cancan. Now one of Paris’s best spots for rock, roots and the long-running Sunday Bal , it has an ornate facade that’s listed, but the roof was damaged in a fire in 2011 and the venue is due to reopen in 2016. A few doors away is the Théâtre du Trianon (No. 80; tel: 01 44 92 78 00; www.letrianon.fr ; pictured), an old operetta and vaudeville hall now used for foot-stomping musicals and accordion fests, as well as rock and chanson . Downstairs is its lovely vintage café-bistro, Le Petit Trianon (tel: 01 44 92 78 08). La Cigale (No. 120; tel: 01 49 25 81 75; www.lacigale.fr ) is another glorious old venue with an Art Deco facade and tiered balcony, while next door, laid-back café La Fourmi (74 rue des Martyrs; tel: 01 42 64 70 35) is popular before gigs or clubbing at Le Divan du Monde (75 rue des Martyrs; tel: 01 42 52 02 46; www.divandumonde.com ), a sultry club that has succeeded the Divan Japonais, immortalised in posters by Toulouse-Lautrec.

As to the famous Moulin Rouge (82 boulevard de Clichy; tel: 01 53 09 82 82; www.moulinrouge.fr ), it largely plays to coachloads of tourists. For a more fun alternative, try Chez Michou (80 rue des Martyrs; tel: 01 46 06 16 04; www.michou.com ), where dapper, blue-jacketed Michou comperes a cheeky drag show with a cast of glittering divas.
