Shop for unusual home accessories at the eclectic Nick Metropolis Collectible Furniture Market
Carol M. Highsmith/Library of Congress
If you’ve ever dreamed of having one or two quirky street signs or even old movie props hanging in your man cave, the garage, or even pride of pace in the dining room, then a visit to Nick Metropolis Collectible Furniture Market is a dream come true.
This is truly a sanctuary for salvaged signage and offers everything from traffic lights and metallic construction signs to aluminum letters in every size and color. For more than 20 years, its eponymous owner and appraiser has been collecting and refurbishing midcentury furniture and large-scale signage, such as the light-up replica of the Hollywood Sign, reclaimed from a chain of Hollywood Video stores in Austin and recently purchased by Miley Cyrus.
But this retreat for all things retro isn’t just for starlets and movie studios. New knick-knacks and affordable Art Deco oddities are stocked daily, and with a free delivery service, you just may end up going home with a Hollywood sign for your living room. Unfortunately, as a result of rising rent costs, Nick’s market is potentially facing closure. So, do pop by, because there should be more places like this in Los Angeles and if this one disappears, it will be sorely missed. Wander through the positively jam-packed isles crammed full of curiosities. There’s stuff laid out indoors and outdoors and it will take quite a while to take everything in. Nowhere else on Earth offers the chance to own a slice of American pop-culture from the halcyon heydays of Hollywood. Parking is on the street, but you should be able to find a spot on La Brea or around the corner on S Sycamore Avenue.
