From 1890, the Anglophile New England art collector Edward Perry Warren lived with a “male brotherhood” in Lewes House, now occupied by the local council. He commissioned from the French sculptor Auguste Rodin a version of The Kiss, with instructions that the man’s genitals should be “seen in their entirety”. The result horrified the town council and it was only briefly displayed; today, it is in the Tate Britain gallery in London. The High Street drops steeply to the River Ouse, and over the bridge is Harvey’s, brewers of one of the best Sussex beers, and Anne of Cleves’s House (www.sussexpast.co.uk; Feb, Nov Tue–Sat 10am–4pm, Sun–Mon 11am–4pm, Mar–Oct until 5pm), a 16th-century timber-framed hall house given to Anne of Cleves in her divorce settlement with Henry VIII, though she never lived here. Beyond it are the outline foundations of Lewes Priory, once one of the greatest Cluniac priories in Europe.

Brighton

London’s favourite resort is an hour’s train journey from the capital and a short drive west along the A27 from Lewes. The story of Brighton & [map] begins with a local doctor, Richard Russell, who in a tract in 1750 extolled the efficacy of seawater, both to drink and to bathe in. The practice became so sociably desirable that when Russell opened an establishment with attendants called “bathers” (for men) and “dippers” (for women), he could count on the patronage of the Prince Regent (later George IV). It became the favourite haunt of “Prinny”, and in 1784, he drove a coach from London on a new, direct road in 4 hours 30 minutes. Today, the journey is accomplished in a quarter of that time. On summer weekends, day-trippers arrive at Brighton Station. From there, it’s a short walk down Queen’s Road and West Street to the promenade, the stony beach and sparkling sea.
