New Beginning

Mellai sat up, startled awake by an overwhelming sense of anxiety and pain. It took her a moment to realize that the feelings weren’t her own, but her brother’s.

Her grandmother came bustling in from the bedroom, wrapped in a thick robe. “What’s wrong?”

“I . . . I had a bad dream,” Mellai responded. Her body shook as she worried over what had happened to Lon.

“Sweetheart, you’re trembling,” her grandmother said as she sat down next to her granddaughter, “I’ve never heard such an unnerving scream before. Do you want to talk about it?”

Mellai stared out the east window of their home at the glowing sunrise, hesitant to answer. She had been living with her grandparents for a week. They took her in and never asked for an explanation of her family’s sudden disappearance or whereabouts. Mellai had been considering whether to tell them the truth about Lon and her family.

“I was screaming? I—” Mellai began, but was interrupted by the front door crashing open.

Theiss charged in, gardening hoe in hand, ready to start swinging. “Where is he?” he demanded as he scanned the room for trouble.

“It’s nothing, Theiss,” her grandmother answered, a little perplexed. “She just had a bad dream.”

Allegna’s words drew Theiss’s attention to Mellai, whose face was partially hidden in the arms of her grandmother. He blanched. “Pardon me, Allegna. I heard Linney screaming and . . . I apologize for barging in.” Without another word, he ducked out of the house and closed the door.

“I’m sorry for the intrusion, Mellai,” Allegna said as she stood up and looked through the back window. “That boy has a good heart. Should there be an intruder, I would have felt sorry for him. Theiss looked ready to grapple with a full grown bear.”

Mellai joined her grandmother at the window and stared at the large field behind the house. Both her grandfather and Theiss were working nearby, removing the dead corn stalks and tomato plants and placing them in a large pile. Despite her apprehension for Lon, Mellai couldn’t help but smile at the sight of Theiss vigorously ripping the corn stocks out of the ground.

“It’ll take him a few days to recover from that,” Mellai joked.

“Yes, it will,” Allegna replied with a chuckle. “I doubt he’s ever seen a woman in her nightgown before.” They watched the men work for a short time before Allegna spoke again. “Are you feeling better?”

Mellai frowned. “Not really.”

She realized that Lon’s mind was completely at ease, which meant he was unconscious. Mellai was certain he had used True Sight. Had he revealed himself to the Rayders?

Allegna disappeared out of the room and returned with a leather satchel similar to Shalán’s. Using a pot of hot water she had boiled for her husband, she made hot tea for Mellai.

“Drink this,” she said as she handed a cup to her granddaughter. “It will help calm you.”

Mellai took the cup and drank the tea slowly, enjoying how it warmed her body and soothed her nerves. When
