I’ve spent almost four and a half years in prison since my arrest and I think I’ve learnt a lot of things … most situations here throw up complex issues, which don’t present simple ‘right-wrong’ choices… What I’ve really had to learn is a more flexible and patient approach, the ability to compromise – and to recognise when it is necessary.

Dear Lyn,

Things are unchanged. The run-up to Xmas is always a bit heavy. Tempers are shorter than usual… People generally feel a bit depressed. It’s not because of any special attachment to the festive season, but the general slowing down of an already slow life. We seem to get fewer letters than usual. Unisa is closed, so fewer good books, etc., arrive.

To deal with this lack of input, I’m trying to work on a few projects. For example, I’m going through the Wiehahn (government) report on labour relations. I’m also trying to improve my German – one of the useful things that I learned in my first year here.
