Chapter 14
The journey to the captainâs residence was at once short, and an experiment in ceaseless agony. Every step bounced my injuries against his shoulder, keeping me just lucid enough to dread whatever was to come next. Whatever would make it official.
Would it matter? With the Raith sipping at what remained of my ki, would there be anything for the captain to torture when we got to where we were going, or would he find heâd captured nothing more than a frozen, empty shell?
I missed the moment when the captain entered his homeâthe Raith was chewing holes in my time-line. I couldnât recall how we came to be sitting in a tiled bathroom, my head resting on his shoulder as he fiddled with something behind me. And neither could I decipher anything beyond the low rumble of his voice as he murmured to the others, working as he talked.
My motherâs pendant was pressed between us, mocking me as it bruised my collarbone. Filled to bursting with years of rare and dangerous ki, yet utterly beyond my reach.
âReady?â Marco asked, his voice distorted and far away.
âYes,â the captain said, gathering me against him, dragging my wrists above my head and fastening them to a bar fixed to the ceiling.
Body stretched taut, I cried out, eyes squeezed shut against the pain. âMmph. D-Donât,â I groaned, sagging in my new bonds, unable to fight any longer.
The captain ignored me, stepping back, inky gaze sweeping the length of my body.
âIs that blood?â Marco asked, frowning at the captainâs hands, then looking to me.
The captain scowled, rubbing forefinger and thumb together as he inspected me. âCanât tell if itâs hers or mine, at this point.â
âBoth, Iâd imagine,â Alicia whispered, twisting her hands. âThe slaver⦠Jasper⦠she fought him.â
Clearing his throat, the captain drew a wicked, curved blade, caught my eye, and said, âRight. Well. Itâs probably best if you donât move.â
I summoned the fiercest glare I could muster. As if I had much choice in the matter, dangling helpless before him. Scarcely able to draw breath, let alone protest the destruction of my hand-crafted clothing, I was stripped bare. My armor against the elements, abrasions, and unwanted attention were cut away, discarded in a careless heap in the corner of a tiled shower stall. He didnât stop until I was all but nude before him, hanging in nothing but the strips of cloth wound about my breasts and between my legs.
âOh, lass,â Alicia gasped.
I craned my head around, inspecting the massive purple bruise spreading across my midsection. At the center, the outline of a fist was plainly visible, and below it, the bleeding edges of torn flesh.
âFuck.â The captain tossed his blade into the sink, pushing a crimson hand through his thick, dark hair. Circling me. âFuck!â
âWildcat must have caused a lot of trouble for the slavers to do this.â
âThatâs a lash from a whip, Marco,â the captain retorted, gently prodding my wounds. âIâm going to kill that bastard very, very, slowly.â
âOh, Jasperâs long gone, sir.
