CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The TV was still on when I opened my eyes. It was light and I was still underneath the blanket. I had slept all night. I couldn’t remember a single toss or turn. I stretched out my arms and legs. I still felt woozy but on the whole I felt better. My body and mind felt recharged.

I got out of bed and used the loo. Then I ran the tap, splashed my face with water and brushed my teeth. I turned the TV back to BBC1. BBC Breakfast was on. I sat back on my bed and tried to watch but my mind soon started ticking over. I wondered what was going to happen today. Was I going to have to use my cover story? I was scared again. I was scared about having to lie and scared of being found out.

My door opened. It was one of the guards doing the morning call for the canteen. Thankfully all she did was say, ‘Breakfast,’ before moving on to the next cell. I stayed sat on my bed. I still wasn’t hungry. And even if I was, I wasn’t going to risk another run in with the drug addict from court who could tell everyone I was a child killer.

I sat, staring blankly at the TV, until the next guard appeared at my door. ‘Medication,’ she said, flicking her head to gesture me out onto the wing. I got up and stepped outside. There was a queue for the morning drugs, but it wasn’t quite as busy as the night-time one. I joined the back and waited patiently, repeating my prison number in my head until it was my turn. When I got to the front it was a different woman dishing the tablets out.

‘Number?’

‘TG6315.’

She handed me the two cups – one with a tablet in, the other half full with water. I took it and went back to my cell, wondering whether a tiny pill was really capable of lifting the darkness I was drowning in.

The TV was still on. I picked up the welcome pack that was still lying on the table next to it. I sat on the bed and tipped out the contents. There was the unused tea bag, the packet of instant coffee and the sugars. Then I saw the phone card. I decided I was going to phone Stacey sometime that day. I knew the court case was strictly off limits, I just wanted to hear her voice.

I sensed I wasn’t alone and looked up to see a girl had appeared at my door. She was about 27, slim and about the same height as me but with short, dark, poker-straight hair.

‘Hiya,’ she said. She seemed to gauge my reaction for a second before stepping inside.

‘I’m Dawn. You’re new, right? I just thought I’d say hi.’

I shuffled nervously and sat up a little straighter. My heart was thumping. She’s a prisoner. What does she want? Does she know why I’m here?

‘What’s your name?’ she asked.
