CHAPTER EIGHT

THE FOUR PILLARS OF MINDFUL FITNESS

There are four essential parts to a whole being.

I BELIEVE THAT to live a meaningful life, we must learn to balance its four basic aspects—physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual—by honoring the importance of each one and setting goals for achieving each aspect’s optimum health and fitness. If you’re familiar with traditional Chinese philosophy, you have heard about the ancient concept of balancing yin and yang—the two opposing forces found in all things in the universe—to optimize chi, or life force. Ayurveda, the traditional healing philosophy from India, is also based on finding a balance in your mental and emotional states, and connecting with your spirit to heal your body.

I base my philosophy of living life in balance on ancient wisdom I don’t believe that you have to reject material things to achieve well-being, but I do believe that you need to find a balance among all four aspects to feel good about yourself and find true happiness. Think of those aspects or states as reservoirs that need to refill with energy before they’re emptied. If you don’t put gas in your car, you’ll run out. The same holds true for your life: if you don’t recharge your energy spent, you’ll get burned out.

Remember Roger in the previous chapter? When he came to see me at the resort, he’d depleted most of his reservoirs and had reached dangerous levels, thus creating both conscious and unconscious self-destructive habits that would bring him down to a very low level of existence.

Although Roger would get on a path to full recovery from drugs and alcohol, it was only by combining therapy and the tools outlined in this book that his success was possible. His rehabilitation wasn’t easy, as he had developed bad eating habits and wasn’t exercising. This is often the case with individuals trying to battle an addiction—they swap one habit for another. Roger would gain weight because of poor eating habits, lack of sleep, lack of exercise, and unmanaged stress.

I don’t think anyone needs to hit rock bottom before they can awaken to reality; accepting one’s current life situation is key to moving toward healing. I’m glad Roger reached out and was honest enough to open up. Together we worked to address all four aspects of his life. Using these methods, Roger regained moment-to-moment equilibrium.

Regardless of what you are dealing with, implementing the information outlined here and throughout this book will help you restore optimal health and well-being back into your life.
