Chapter 13

“What are you doing here?” I asked, still lying flat on my back.

“I’m visiting my aunt.” He offered me a hand that I reluctantly took.

“Catherine is your aunt?” I asked as he pulled me into a sitting position. I closed my computer and set it on the bench as he then pulled me to my feet.

“She is.”

“Darcy, what are you doing? Knocking pretty girls onto the ground is not the way to behave.” A smiling man, maybe in his mid-thirties walked over towards us. “I must apologize for my cousin here. He’s hopeless around women.” I laughed and took an immediate liking to him.

“It’s not the first time.” I smiled back at the man as Catherine herself walked over towards us.

“Fitz, let me introduce you to Lizzy Bennet.” Darcy said. Before he could say anything else, Catherine interrupted.

“You know my nephew?” She asked, sounding skeptical. Today’s pantsuit was a navy blue, and her hair was back in a French twist that wouldn’t dare to fall out.

“I do. We met back in Colorado.” This seemed to impress her in a way nothing about me had before. She invited Charlotte, Collin, and I for dinner that night, though she ignored us throughout it, focusing almost entirely on Darcy.

After dinner I curled up in a chair in the corner and waited for Charlotte to be ready to leave. To my surprise Darcy came and sat next to me.

“How’s your family?” He asked.

“They’re okay.” I said shortly, not wanting to talk to him.

“And how’s school?”

“Absolutely terrible.” I ran a hand over my hair and sighed.

“Which class?” He seemed genuinely interested.

“Calculus.” I said it like a curse word. He tipped his head back and laughed, drawing everyone’s attention. Catherine pursed her lips then went back to instructing Collin on how he was to handle whatever business deal he was working on at the moment.

Fitz walked over towards us with a big smile. “So, Lizzy, tell me how Darcy was in Colorado?”

I twisted towards him and ignored Darcy glaring at his cousin next to me. “Would you really like to know? It might horrify you.”

“I would.”

“The first time I met him I think he said three words.” Fitz cracked up.

“I can believe it.”

“And he has the bad habit of sneaking up on me. Today wasn’t the first time I hit the ground because he popped out of nowhere and scared me.”

“I think the snow could take partial credit for the first time.” Darcy said. I laughed.

“Maybe. But I still blame you.” Catherine called for Fitz, so he left.

“I-I’m not very good at talking to people I’ve just met.” I turned back to face him, thinking again what a shame it was that such an arrogant jerk was so attractive.

“I’m not very good at calculus. But I’m working on it.” I arched a brow before telling Charlotte I was going back to the guest house ahead of her.

“This is Samson.” The head trainer told me the next morning at six o clock on the dot, haltering a pretty paint.
