CHAPTER 17

The twenty-minute walk through the streets of London had felt far longer, as I was painfully aware of my MI5 tail. Of course, I’d been making absolutely sure that I did nothing that might inadvertently shake him. To have any chance of restoring the timeline to its correct path, everything hinged on me successfully leading this agent to the German safe house.

I surreptitiously checked the address that I’d scribbled down in my notebook—16 Warrick Place—for the third time. According to the map, that was just the other side of the Covent Garden Market, with its grand stone columned roof.

As I entered it, despite it only being five in the morning, the traders were already setting up their stalls for the day ahead, from butchers, grocers, to florists, and everything in between.

I glanced discreetly back, pretending to smell a rose at a flower stall. Much to my relief, I spotted my MI5 chum duck into a second-hand bookstall and pretend to flick through the pages of a dusty volume.

The tension across my shoulders released a fraction. So far, so good.

I set off again, like a man in no particular hurry, with time on his side. A few minutes later, as I exited the market on the far end, I glance at the street name.

Warrick Place, my destination.

Much to my relief, I could also see Leon’s Bentley parked outside a three-storey house.

Still trying to keep my pace measured, I headed straight towards it. There was no one else around and the curtains were firmly drawn across all the windows. There was also no sign of Will and Felix, who I hoped were already inside. Hopefully, by now, they’d had plenty of time to place Leon’s body in readiness for the gas explosion that would happen shortly.

I stopped to pretend to tie a shoelace on the step, but when I glanced round, I couldn’t see the MI5 agent. Of course, he was almost certainly hanging back in the market, where he would have a clear view of the road and house that I was standing before.

A buzz of fresh adrenaline surged through me as I headed up the steps and my mouth grew drier by the moment. What if something had gone wrong? What if somebody passing had seen the two of them carrying Leon’s body inside? What if the house hadn’t been empty after all and they’d stumbled across another German spy already there? That and a dozen other bleak scenarios raced through my mind as I reached the door and noticed that it was slightly ajar. As agreed, the others had left it on the latch for me. But not taking any chances as I stepped inside, I already had the disruptor in my hand.

The gloom was deep within the house and dust sheets covered the chairs and table in the hallway, indicating that this part of the building was barely used. However, a gas lamp flickered on the wall that, despite the ominous silence, was doing little to calm my nerves, suggested that my friends were indeed here somewhere in this house.
