Chapter Ten

Frank got up at 0600 hours to start his day. He quickly cleaned himself up, grabbed some food out of his fridge, and met Dr. Myers and Chief Ito in medical to go over their plan. On his way, he received an update from the communications department with a summary of their findings from eavesdropping on the outpost’s communications.

There was one disturbing revelation that caught Frank off-guard. He decided to wait until he, Jeremy, and Hiroshi had finalized their plans before sharing the information with the doctor. He was grateful Captain Nikols had changed her mind and elected to make contact with the Screen rather than eliminate them, and suspected he owed her decision to Jeremy.

The captain had mentioned the doctor last night when she’d contacted Frank. He suspected Jeremy had gone to Nikols to change her mind. Frank should have been upset that the doctor had gone around him to the captain, but he wasn’t. As far as he was concerned, all that mattered was that she had abandoned her plans to destroy the Screen.

Plus, Jeremy had a lot of experience with the alien race and could provide valuable input to ensure they were taken into custody safely. Frank could put his ego aside for the greater good.

The three men hunkered down in the CMO office and spent the next two hours hammering out their plan to safely bring the Screen on board. As they brainstormed, Frank became increasingly sure they were doing the right thing.

“I think we have something to present to the captain,” Jeremy said as they did a final review of the proposal they’d drafted.

“I’ll personally go over this with her,” Frank said as he uploaded the plan into his DAT.

“I’m assuming she’ll approve it, so I’ll get my team to work on clearing out cargo bay three and putting security procedures in place,” Hiroshi said. “Shall I contact Commander Anvil or will you?”

“You can go ahead and reach out to him to coordinate the security details,” Frank said. “I’m glad the captain changed her mind.”

“You weren’t in agreement about wiping out the Screen?” Hiroshi asked.

“Not really. I know the people who lost loved ones to them would disagree. Yes, they did try to wipe us out, but this outpost is the last of their race. It wouldn’t be right to kill them.”

Hearing this gave Jeremy a lot more respect for the commander. The doctor had met too many officers who merely reiterated their satisfaction that the Screen had been wiped out. He’d gained compassion for the Screen after being privy to a classified meeting with the command council. A Screen jumpgate had been discovered and a capital ship was sent through it to the Triangulum Galaxy. The council had learned that the Screen originated from that galaxy, where they’d lived as slaves, and had fled to the Milky Way to escape their oppressors. It was understandable they were fearful of other races and had taken drastic action to protect themselves. He wasn’t excusing their actions, but he’d gained a better understanding of their motivations.
