CHAPTER EIGHT

After a final check of the truck for left-behinds, Sly said goodbye to last of the Trosh family before heading into the shop to check the schedule. Inside, he found Alice and Treena behind the counter having a talk while Maurice listened between sips of coffee. Sly made eye contact with Maurice and noticed him slightly shaking his head as a warning for Sly to get out if he valued his life. Sly grabbed the schedule book and turned for the door when he heard the sound of doom.

"Hey, Buddy, doing anything tonight?" Treena asked.

Dammit! Sly thought to himself. "Well, I do have..."

"Great! Maurice and Alice are having a few friends over for cocktails, and they'd like you to attend."

He looked up at Alice, the woman who could command a beartopus with a single glance. "And why are you telling me this? Aren't you dating some guy with biceps big enough to crack walnuts?"

She cuffed him. "Silly! A friend of mine is coming into town, and I'd like you to meet her."

Alice smiled.

Maurice found something to do out back.

He looked at his friend and realized that she was doing what Orane do: they have a lonely friend, they hooked them up with another lonely friend. He had no choice in the matter. His fate was sealed.

"Fine. Where and when?"

"Tonight, 1900 hours, Alice's house."

"What's the address?"

"You've never been to Alice's house?"

"No. Come to think of it... Never mind. I'll get it from Maurice." He looked at the schedule, then the door where a family of humans with yellow eyes waited. "Your 1300 hours is here."

"Cool. Can you grab the cases while I greet our clients?"

"Sure. Go work your magic."

She walked off leaving the two of them looking at each other.

"You haven't been to her place either, have you?" Alice asked.

"I'm working on it. My counselor suggests I try to get out more."

"You know you're always welcome in our home."

"You're so sweet. Especially considering I'm an embodiment of one of your more violent gods."

"You know about that?"

"I read a lot. There are tons of information about tilions but very little about Orane. As for werewolves, the movies have gotten ubiquitous."

"You, sir, are not ubiquitous."

"Are you and Maurice OK with this? If not, I can come up with an excuse not to come."

"We're fine. We're not that religious." She handed him a slip of paper. "Directions to our humble home."

"Do you two partake in spirits?"

"Spirits...? Oh, you mean do we drink. Right. Yes, we both love beer, the darker the better."

He nodded. "Is this a formal or informal gathering?"

"Treena planned it."

"Ah, dress to the nines..."

"Sylvester!" Treena yelled.

"Coming My Queen," he said. He leaned down and gave Alice a peck on the top of her head. "I am being summoned. See you tonight." He walked into the back and returned with a large bin balanced on each shoulder as he headed to the front door.

For someone in full-werewolf-mode, there is no such thing as a quick shower, but Sly was able to get one in and get to the party on time.
