CONCLUSION

Student engagement is an important measure of teaching effectiveness and learning outcomes. Traditionally, teachers have used different tools and techniques to engage students. One such technique is to assign students higher level of responsibility by way of positional shift of roles (Dennen, 2007).

This chapter presents a study that involved students as moderators with an aim to engage them better. Three modes of moderation were applied based on the qualitative experience of the professor. Each of the selected modes was applied on a separate cohort. Involvement and feedback of students were analysed using a qualitative review. Observations made have been classified into four factors – student inhibition, individual performance, discussion quality and long-term learning. Results clearly establish the usefulness of changing the student position as a moderator in an online asynchronous discussion forum for executive management education.

Further research work is recommended to empirically investigate the inter-relation of student engagement with the three modes of student moderation as well as with the four factors identified in this study.
