Supporting the earliest stages of exploration and play in very young children

Most of the ideas suggested in this chapter are suitable or can easily be adapted for very young infants. Some things to think about are:

Scale: think about the size, height, distance and sight lines that will make an activity manageable and attractive for very young children.

Objects: young children love to handle and discover the properties of objects (as in sensory environments below). Be aware of choosing objects which do not pose a choking hazard, which are safe to be explored with the mouth and tongue and which little hands can handle.

Novelty: do you include new, surprising or occasional make-you-jump elements? Think about how children love ‘peek a boo’ and jack-in-a-box.

The aural environment: children need peaceful moments too and although it is important to communicate richly with children, they don’t need to be continually awash with spoken language.
