Chapter Fourteen

I hear my name being called, but I’m too numb to respond. I feel like I’ve been ripped to shreds by the mere force of her disloyalty. My back feels raw, and I can almost feel the knife sticking out of it. The sound of something crashing through the trees snaps me back to reality, and I look up in time to see Emory about twenty feet ahead of me. He moves through the trees like he knows each one. He moves like a professional would.

“Here, I’m over here.” I’m still angry, but now I feel embarrassed for being so blind and accepting of everyone here. I don’t know why I thought it would be different here. There’s always a bad seed.

“What the hell happened?” he asks almost angrily before he gets a good look at me.

“Lily, she’s a traitor.” The knife pulls out of my back, slowly, from my admission.

“What do you mean? What happened?” He scans our surroundings looking for Lily.

“She’s gone. Lily’s gone,” I press my lips together determined not to cry.

“Phee, tell me what’s going on.”

“She came in here to use the bathroom, but I heard something and followed her.” I hang my head feeling stupid for not looking closer before I attacked him. “There was a man holding her from behind, and I thought…” it sounds too ludicrous in my head. “I thought he was hurting her. Now I realize he was probably kissing her. I didn’t know…I’ve never seen anyone…” I’m too angry to get it out.

He diligently walks a twenty-five foot radius around me, studying the ground. “How many were there?”

“Just the man and Lily,” I choke out her name, but I won’t shed a tear. And with Emory in his protective mode, I feel out of place. He’s doing what he should be doing, but I can’t help but feel like he’s eliminating me as a suspect. I stand up and straighten my spine as best as I can. It takes some effort. What I feel now is nothing compared to what Joe did to me, but it hurts nonetheless.

“You’re bleeding,” the first hint of concern surfaces, and he stops looking for clues. “Why didn’t you tell me you were hurt?” He walks behind me and looks at my back, sucking air through his teeth. “Let’s get you back to Chloe.”

I’m tight-lipped. I don’t ask if it’s bad because I honestly don’t care. I just want to get back to the house and hole up in my room. I just have to get away from the woods. I know I’ll have to talk to Charlie and whoever else is working security today. I have an irrational feeling that I’m going to get swallowed up and never come back out.

“Are you all right to walk?” He’s guarding me carefully, but I still don’t trust my voice. I’m angry, and hurt. I grab my wrist rubbing my tattoo, my talisman—except it only brings bad luck. His eyes follow my fingers. “Phee?”

“Let’s just get out of here.
