chapter 20
Marshall and Costa sat at the table finishing off a bottle of Tsaoussi. Brian was in the kitchen helping Niki with the last of the closing chores, and one of the girls was vacuuming up front. Costa had his feet propped up on a chair next to him, and Marshall was lounging across the banquette.
âItâs nice what youâre doing for Brian,â Marshall said.
âHeâs a good kid.â Costaâd never had a little brother, only sisters, but he imagined if heâd had a brother, and that brother was in need, heâd help him much the same way he was helping Brian. All the kid needed was a little push, a little guidance, like Costaâd gotten from his father, his brothers, and uncles. It was a shame Brianâs dad had run out on them when he was a boy.
Marshall took a drink of the sweet, fruity wine. He leaned his head back against the banquette, savoring it. âI never thought of myself as much of a wine drinker,â he said, âBut this is fucking good.â
Costa nodded. âFrom Greece. My dad knows someone on the island of Cephalonia.â
âYou really are a decent guy,â Marshall said. âIâm sorry I thought you and Violetââ
Costa held up his hand. âNo worries. Is past. And hey, we all had our doubts about Violet at one time or another, huh?â He took a drink of his wine. âShe was like . . . whatâs that weird metal liquid?â
âMercury?â
âYeah. Didnât they used to call it quicksilver?â
Marshall nodded.
âYeah, that,â Costa said.
âYouâre kind of a poet,â Marshall said, smiling.
âHey, Iâm Greek. Itâs in the blood.â
âDo you think this is stupid? All of us getting together like this?â
Marshall looked at Costa, and the older man could see the weariness in the younger manâs face. He was having a harder time than heâd admit, but all in all, he was sure holding it together better than Costa had when he was in the same boat.
âThe guys?â Costa said. âNah. Itâs good. Hey,â he said. âWeâre like brothers.â
âWe did sorta gel right away, didnât we?â
âCommon ground,â said Costa. They sat in silence for a moment. Then Costa leaned forward and lowered his voice. âSo, how you really doing, huh?â
Marshall let out a sigh. âI donât know. I havenât heard from her. I expect next time I do it will be in divorce court. I wonder about the house. If sheâll want it. Thereâs still some of her stuff there.â
âShe wonât,â said Costa, shaking his head. âViolet doesnât like to go back to the scene of the crime.â
âYeah,â said Marshall. âIâm not sure I want to stay there either.â
âI know what you mean,â Costa said.
Marshall laughed. âI threw the bed out.â
âNo shit?â
âRight out on the curb. After our first meeting with the guys. It was only out there like twenty minutes. Some one in a beat-up truck stopped and took it.â
âDonât rush yourself.â Costa poured the last of the wine in their glasses. âBut donât stay in a rut either.â
âWhat kind of fucked-up advice is that?â
âYou godda listen to your heart.
