Chapter 11

It was a somber, drizzly Fourth of July evening and yet as Angel stirred a bubbling pot of gumbo on the stove, she hummed. There was sunshine in her heart, always sunshine in her days. She didn't see Zachary on them all, but not a day went by that he didn't at least call.

Every now and then she called him, but never at work. Not after that once, when she'd called to thank him for replacing the light bulb on her landing while she was gone. It was such a small but thoughtful, caring gesture. It made her feel as if he wanted to protect her—though in truth, the only thing she really needed protecting from was Zachary himself. His easy insinuation into her life had the unfortunate downside of knowing she couldn't let herself start needing him too much. The call she'd made to his office several weeks ago had driven home the truth of that.

It had taken some gathering of courage to call into L.J. Steele and ask to speak to Mr. Taylor since his calls got screened and the receptionist immediately recognized her name.

"Angel? How've you been doing? Oh, and what happened with Doug, I heard about that and everyone thinks he's a real jerk, but what were you doing at a place like that anyway..." And so on until, little miss snoopy asked, "Why do you want to speak to Mr. Taylor? He's awfully busy and told me not to put anyone through unless it was important."

Angel knew it wasn't all that important, she could thank him later. But she wanted reassurance that he felt she was important enough herself to interrupt whatever it was he was doing. Not only that, there was a pride factor involved. Apparently the word had spread about her dancing at the bachelor party and Doug pulling down her top; if word had spread that she was now seeing the big boss, miss snoopy would be one of the first to know and she gave no clue that she did. Zachary was a very private person and Angel knew he didn't go around broadcasting things about his private life—which now included her. Nonetheless, she didn't want to be relegated to the fringes, like something to be hidden. The fact was, she had a relationship with Zachary Taylor and if she wanted to call him at work to thank him for changing her light bulb, she should be able to do so.

"Just patch me through," Angel said confidently. Then, unable to resist, added, "Zach and I are friends. He won't mind taking my call."

She'd said a lot without really saying anything and it gave her a sense of satisfaction that speculation would be running like wildfire once break time came.

Her satisfaction was short lived, however. Short as the harsh bark of, "Taylor."

For a moment she was speechless. The man who had blown her a kiss into the receiver the last time he'd called had transformed into Attila the Hun chewing nails and spitting them at anyone who dared to intrude with an unwanted ring of the phone.
