THIRTEEN

Kenneth, Trevor and Mark had left the Sears ranch late the same day they buried his father. They’d camped in the wilderness near the rough two-track road that led to the valley, and finally made it back by late afternoon of the following day. Kenneth made his way straight to the bunkhouse where he kept his things as soon as they arrived there, and after waiting until Trevor and Mark stowed their gear and left, he carefully removed the rolled-up blanket from under his bunk and untied the cords with which he’d secured it. The bow and quiver full of stone-tipped arrows, and the razor-sharp pressure-flaked obsidian knife with its antler handle were all there, just as he’d left them. Kenneth took the items out one-by-one, turning them in his hands and running his fingers over the surfaces. He had to confirm once again they were real, because he’d been obsessing over these objects and his experience at that cave ever since early morning yesterday, when Sierra broke the news to him that his father had shared his secret with Douglas Timms. And after hearing Alan Carson’s account of his own experience there and realizing that what he claimed was true, Kenneth couldn’t stop thinking about it. Finding Sierra home was almost equally improbable and unexpected, and Kenneth couldn’t stop thinking about her. Sierra looked even better than she had the last time he’d seen her. She’d always been outdoorsy and fit from growing up where and how she did, riding horses and working cattle from an early age. And now she seemed perfectly at home in this harsh reality everyone had been forced into by the collapse of the grid and the loss of access to outside goods and services. Kenneth had just watched her take out several enemy combatants with cool precision, despite dodging incoming fire. Sierra Timms had grit and determination not only to survive, but prevail, and she was everything a man like him needed in a partner in a world such as this.

Kenneth knew when he watched her ride away with her grandpa and Alan Carson yesterday that he’d be paying her a visit soon, and now that he was back at the valley and had reported the attack and the death of his father to the others there, he was ready to leave again. He spent one night and left at daybreak the next morning, after telling Trevor and Mark of his plans but insisting on riding alone. There was more
