Alan knew immediately that it was Cody Timms who took the disassembled AR-15 and its magazines from inside that blanket. He hadn’t touched the cord tying it up since he’d arrived there, as he and Thomas had both used the heavier blankets Connie had told them they could find in the bunkhouse trunk. Alan was certain no one but Cody could have done it, because the girls weren’t allowed near the bunkhouse, and Douglas was far too small. Connie certainly wouldn’t have rummaged through his belongings, but he had no doubt Cody would. The older boy had eyed him and Thomas with suspicion since the moment they arrived here, and it was obvious he wasn’t thrilled about having them around.

Alan wondered if he slipped into the bunkhouse just a short time earlier, when he’d gone out to shut down the generator for the night. He’d been gone longer than necessary for that simple task, so Alan knew he’d had enough time to do it. Maybe the kid wanted to see if Thomas had anything of value among his meager possessions, or maybe he was just curious. Either way, he would have been surprised to feel the weight of Alan’s blanket roll if he picked it up, and his curiosity at that point must have been insatiable. But what would a 12-year-old ranch boy from 1957 make of a modern Colt AR-15 with a high-tech optic like the one with which it was equipped? Alan could only imagine. It wouldn’t be as shocking as it was to Thomas Pratt, but still, it was a far cry from the traditional hunting rifles and shotguns that Alan had no doubt Cody could already handle like an expert.

He thought back to what he’d learned of the AR-15/M-4 platform in his training and remembered that it was invented in the 1950s by Eugene Stoner. As far as he knew, it was unlikely that knowledge of the design was widespread until a decade later though, when the infamous M16 was battled tested in Vietnam and hated by soldiers who found those earlier versions less than reliable. Would Cody turn it over to the sheriff when he arrived, causing a big stir in his law enforcement agency as they tried to figure out what it was and where it came from? Or was he planning to confront Alan about it himself come morning?

Alan had no idea, but he wasn’t going to stick around to find out. A direct confrontation could result in the kid getting hurt, as Alan had no idea how worked up the boy would be if it came to that. Being the cause of anyone else getting hurt was the last thing Alan wanted after what just happened to Thomas Pratt. Now he had something else to regret, because simply bringing a modern AR-15 here to the ranch in 1957 could have untold ramifications he couldn’t yet fathom. But it was done and there was nothing he could do about it now. He’d already
