The tombs of Kastor and Polydeuces

Better still for our purposes, you can pay your respects to the pair by anchoring off Kardamyli and taking the ten-minute walk to see their tombs. The town does have a little harbour but depths are no more than 1.5m (4.9ft) inside and 2m (6.6ft) on the approach so you might have to give that some consideration. If you anchor off, there tends to be a modicum of swell in all but the most settled weather but there is some shelter to be had from prevailing winds behind the islet of Meropi (36°52’49.7”N 22°14’03.7”E), where you can drop the hook in around 4m (13.1ft) of water.

Once you’re ashore, you’ll find yourself in a charming little town, with the historical old town up above. To reach the tombs you simply have to walk about ten minutes along the path from Old Kardamyli to the village of Agia Sophia. The tombs are situated inside the gorge of Viros, which extends from the forest of Basilica at Mount Taygetus. The chamber tombs themselves are two rectangular cavities adjacent to one another, carved into a vertical cliff.
