LATER THAT NIGHT, as Cordero gathered around a neighborhood fire with Tiro, Braka, and Rana, he brought up his interaction with the bearded man in a quiet voice.

“Yeah,” Braka said, glancing around the area, “I noticed him glaring at you when you left to help round up horses. I’m still not sure what to make of it.”

“Maybe he had a run-in with the redeemers at some point?” offered Rana. “He might be dangerous if that’s the case. His friends, too. They all had a, I don’t know, dirty look to them.”

“Let’s not jump to conclusions just yet,” Tiro said, waving a hand in the air. “We’ll keep an eye on them, but it won’t serve us to create another issue unless it’s absolutely necessary. The mission is compromised enough without us conjuring enemies out of thin air.”

“I didn’t mean to disrupt anything,” Cordero said, looking around the group. “I just can’t help feeling like I picked up on something from him. Did anyone see where they came in from? Or when they got here?”

They all shook their heads. “I’ll ask around tomorrow,” Braka said. “At least to find out if they’re travelers or traders.”

“Good call,” Rana said.

“What was the final decision on the kids, anyway?” Tiro asked. “Is Ahto leaving tomorrow or the next day?”

“He says the day after tomorrow,” Braka replied. “One of us will have to accompany them. Either that, or we all make the trip. He can’t go it alone with two small kids.”

“I’ll go,” Tiro said, motioning his hand up.

“Okay,” Braka said, nodding, “so we have another day to help out around here.” Turning to Cordero, he added, “And you can have another day to examine those s’orne corpses.”

“I think I’ve learned everything I’m going to from those,” Cordero said, “but I’d like to scout the area around town to see if I can find anything noteworthy.”

“Let’s make sure at least two of us are with you at all times,” Braka said, “if you leave the village.”

“Of course,” Cordero said, nodding. The group fell silent, each man looking into the fire or toward the heavens. Despite the late season, the summer star band was still positioned overhead, its elongated path of celestial lights stretching up from the horizon and across the sky. Cordero gazed at them, pondering their nature, as he had done since he was a boy.

Somewhere, within the view’s majesty, he pushed the plague of dangers bearing down on him from his mind. As a conscious choice, he pondered the world around him and all the possibilities it offered with each new day. In time, his mind turned to thoughts of the Sapphire District, and he silently longed for the beautiful blue hues unique to the only home he had ever known.
