Chapter Ten

I spend the next couple of hours in the empty art studio, hunched over what I’m guessing to be an old diary, trying to find anything that might lead me to the origins of the medallion. My frustration grows with each pass. No matter how many times I go over it, I can’t find anything remotely helpful. The old script is bunched together and difficult to read; it seems to be a mixture of rough English and some other language I don’t recognize. The ink completely fades away in some spots, making a large portion illegible. The little I can make out is mostly comprised of recipes and odd poems. There are a few personal notes scrawled in some of the margins, but most of those look like lists of ingredients. The name Phara, printed on the inside of the front cover, is the only clue and zero help in figuring out where the medallion came from.

By the end of the school day, when I carefully wrap up the diary in the remnants of the gold dress, not only am I thoroughly discouraged, but I feel a dull ache drumming in my head, threatening to grow into a full-on headache.

I few of the Art 1 students come in after the final bell. They all seem to be excited to work with me on their projects. It’s flattering to hear their comments and see that they appreciate my hard-earned experience, so I ignore the growing headache and try to help them the best I can.

I’m elbow-deep in clay and don’t even notice the hour that passes before Annie shows up in the studio. She motions to me from the door. “I just saw the cleaning crew leave. Might be a good time to go take a look down in the basement.”

A few minutes later, Annie and I manage to sneak past the construction cones blocking the stairs and get down into the basement. We double-check that it’s completely empty before we walk into the records room.

I almost have a full-on heart attack. The closet is gone. No closet.

I go over to where it should be and spin around in the open space. “Right here. The closet was right here.” That’s when I notice the sheet rock has been taken down to reveal the original limestone walls underneath. They’ve torn down the whole room. I squeeze my eyes shut and then open them to check again. I spin around one more time for good measure, hoping maybe there’s something left to give us a clue.

Annie ignores my little panic attack, studying the walls and the ceiling. She starts where the closet is supposed to be and steps off the distance to several other places in the room. I have no idea how any of it can be helpful, but just having someone else trying to help is an immense comfort.

“That must be where the asbestos is. That’s all they left.” She points up to the ceiling where the tiles are still intact.
