Deacon opened his eyes to light streaming in his windows. He blinked at his watch, shoving back the covers when he realized it was after two in the afternoon. How had he slept so long?
He quickly changed into new clothes - he couldnât remember the last time heâd slept in his clothes - and headed to the kitchen. Shonda looked up from the table as he entered.
âHey, feeling better?â
âYeah, I guess. Whereâs Dante?â
Shonda rolled her eyes. âSulking in the room. He realized he left behind his favorite game and doesnât understand why we canât go back to get it. Speaking of which, when do you think weâll be able to go back? At least to get our stuff?â
Deacon pulled out a chair and sat across from Shonda. âI donât know. Iâm going to call Eric in a minute and see what he says. Maybe he can even send someone in if itâs going to be a while.â He didnât want her to leave, but he understood that her life was there. âBut we should talk about Dante.â
She sighed. âI know. He needs to know and you need to be able to spend time with him. Iâm just not sure how to tell him.â
âOne word at a time. We donât have to tell him the whole sordid past. We can tell him we broke it off before I knew about him and that we lost touch. Thatâs mostly the truth anyway.â
âYou make it sound easy.â
Deacon shook his head. âNot easy but simple. Look, let me get something to eat and call Eric. Then we can figure out the best way to tell him.â
Shonda inhaled deeply and nodded. âItâs just so much change, but youâre right. He deserves to know. Thereâs some leftover curry on the stovetop if you want that for lunch.â
âThanks. I will.â He filled a bowl and then pulled out his cell phone and dialed Ericâs number.
âDeacon? Are you guys okay? Where are you?â Eric asked, skipping the normal greeting.
âWeâre fine. Weâre out of town.â He didnât know why he didnât tell Eric they were back at his house, but something stopped him. Caution, maybe? But he trusted Eric, didnât he?
âThatâs good, but how did you get out of town? Your truck is still here.â
âWe found a car with the keys in it. Iâm happy to return it if itâs safe to come get my truck.â
âYou stole a car?â
âWell, not exactly. It was there waiting for us. I assumed you had left it for us, but Iâm guessing from the surprise in your voice that you didnât.â
âNo, I didnât. How did you even get out of the warehouse? We had the place surrounded and never saw you.â
âThereâs a room in there that leads to a tunnel. We followed it and ended up in an abandoned lot a block or so away. Eric, I think something fishy is going on in that warehouse. We found a room with video monitors. I know the place looks abandoned, but I think maybe itâs used for human trafficking or something worse.
