Deacon opened his eyes to light streaming in his windows. He blinked at his watch, shoving back the covers when he realized it was after two in the afternoon. How had he slept so long?

He quickly changed into new clothes - he couldn’t remember the last time he’d slept in his clothes - and headed to the kitchen. Shonda looked up from the table as he entered.

“Hey, feeling better?”

“Yeah, I guess. Where’s Dante?”

Shonda rolled her eyes. “Sulking in the room. He realized he left behind his favorite game and doesn’t understand why we can’t go back to get it. Speaking of which, when do you think we’ll be able to go back? At least to get our stuff?”

Deacon pulled out a chair and sat across from Shonda. “I don’t know. I’m going to call Eric in a minute and see what he says. Maybe he can even send someone in if it’s going to be a while.” He didn’t want her to leave, but he understood that her life was there. “But we should talk about Dante.”

She sighed. “I know. He needs to know and you need to be able to spend time with him. I’m just not sure how to tell him.”

“One word at a time. We don’t have to tell him the whole sordid past. We can tell him we broke it off before I knew about him and that we lost touch. That’s mostly the truth anyway.”

“You make it sound easy.”

Deacon shook his head. “Not easy but simple. Look, let me get something to eat and call Eric. Then we can figure out the best way to tell him.”

Shonda inhaled deeply and nodded. “It’s just so much change, but you’re right. He deserves to know. There’s some leftover curry on the stovetop if you want that for lunch.”

“Thanks. I will.” He filled a bowl and then pulled out his cell phone and dialed Eric’s number.

“Deacon? Are you guys okay? Where are you?” Eric asked, skipping the normal greeting.

“We’re fine. We’re out of town.” He didn’t know why he didn’t tell Eric they were back at his house, but something stopped him. Caution, maybe? But he trusted Eric, didn’t he?

“That’s good, but how did you get out of town? Your truck is still here.”

“We found a car with the keys in it. I’m happy to return it if it’s safe to come get my truck.”

“You stole a car?”

“Well, not exactly. It was there waiting for us. I assumed you had left it for us, but I’m guessing from the surprise in your voice that you didn’t.”

“No, I didn’t. How did you even get out of the warehouse? We had the place surrounded and never saw you.”

“There’s a room in there that leads to a tunnel. We followed it and ended up in an abandoned lot a block or so away. Eric, I think something fishy is going on in that warehouse. We found a room with video monitors. I know the place looks abandoned, but I think maybe it’s used for human trafficking or something worse.
