27. PLANNING AND TROUBLE
THEYâD WORKED SLOWLY, dropping hints to selected women, starting with wishesâall a variation of, âIâd like my daughters to have legs that work better than what we have. Have you thought about that?â Some women readily said yes, others looked pensive. There were those who scowled as if such a thought couldnât even enter their minds. The initial response determined whether a woman would be approached again. Ones who readily said yes were asked how they felt about having a leg removed now that they had twoâmore or less. Hints, suggestions, more often than not presented as questions, were dropped judiciously.
Solanjâl wanted to tap into the womenâs rage but another emotion could hinder it. Shame. All their lives theyâd lived with shame, and generally not being aware of it. But, it was there, like a blemish on the skin not seen because it was part of you, or an ache in a joint youâd learned to live with, not-feeling until something caused a twinge or stab. Solanjâl had no idea why sheâd always been conscious of worthlessness and shame. How could women feel anger if shame had become the natural state? But the anger appearedâgradually, but it came. When a woman realized another might be angry she could consider it and examine her own feelings. Rage started bubbling up in the Gatheringsâin a reverse kind of way. Women spoke of how awful the legs were, how awkward, how uncomfortable, how clumsy. Some would pound on the leg as they spoke. Many talked of not wearing them any longer. They complained and threatened and Solanjâl smiled to herself. Most women would not give up the leg no matter what was said. Increased mobility, even the idea of it, was opening their minds to what else might be.
Some men didnât like what their wives were becoming and ordered them to stop wearing the legs. These women begged their Gathering leaders to intercede. Please ask Solanjâl and Debaâl to ask their husbands to speak out. Glom and Hunak did, at a Gathering of Gatherings. Hunak stated the legs had enriched their lives by making it more interesting and exciting. How fortunate they were to have a man of vision who could bring this about. The implication was men had a duty to have two-legged wives.
Solanjâl wondered about his ready acceptance and approval. Ramprend men wanted their wives maimed; it was the way to sexual excitement and satisfaction. She suspected he was motivated by something beyond a new way to do sex but she hadnât been able to figure out what it was, nor had she asked Debaâl. It was pure superstition but she feared mentioning it would cause the loss of his support.
Glom gave one of his exuberant speeches about the beauty of Glomâs Glamour Legs, of how much pleasure, no, more than pleasure, joy had come to the men of Ramprend and Glomâs Glamour Legs also gave joy to women who were pleasing their men by wearing them. Solanjâl knew it would be a long sex scene that night.
