TWENTY-EIGHT

In a matter of seconds, the sounds of explosions began to grow softer and silence camped at the front of the cockpit. Jace’s eyes never wavered, as the vessel kept gliding along the surface.

“Is that vessel following us?” Maya inquired.

Jace shook her head. “I doubt it. That ancients’ vessel seemed intent on destroying the habitat.”

Kyda groaned, struggling to control her emotions. Despite that, she had to face the stark reality that the ancients’ vessel would do as Jace had mentioned. Kyda tried not to think about Riley’s fate. The young Touri had been courageous and defiant to the end and she couldn’t imagine how the male Touri had sacrificed himself to help them escape. Even with the Touri’s abilities, Riley would have been no match for such a vessel and its arsenal of weapons.

Kyda felt someone touch her right hand and, as she looked up, Sophia’s pale face came into view. There was nothing else left to say. Sophia had figured out that all those Touri in that habitat were probably all dead by now. The ancients’ were relentless and would stop at nothing to achieve their goals.

“I am heading out of here,” Jace announced.

With that, the Swift Triumph began to lift off the planet’s surface and head up through the atmosphere. The journey up into orbit was nerve-wracking for Kyda because there was no way to tell how many ancients’ vessels were around Nithal. She had a strong suspicion it was probably more than one. As Jace brought the Swift Triumph into orbit, she flicked on the stealth mode, ensuring the vessel would be invisible to others out there.

“I hope this stealth mode helps us,” Jace muttered.

The stealth mode was one of those capabilities that Riley had explained to them during their journey to the Vesta Habitat. Kyda had been amazed listening to the young Touri’s detailed knowledge. Thinking again of Riley, Kyda suppressed a sigh. First it had been Welia, then Rupert and now Riley and everyone at the Vesta Habitat. How many more Touri had to die before she could close the portal? The burden of those deaths, coupled with the loss of Trix, began to weigh on Kyda’s heart and mind.

“I still think we should have helped the Touri fight off that ancients’ vessel,” Sophia said.

Kyda wasn’t surprised by Sophia bringing up the topic. Out of all of them, Sophia would have found it the hardest to let go. In a short period of time, Kyda had to admit that Riley had left a deep impression on them.

“Riley instructed us clearly to leave,” Maya retorted. “There was nothing else for us to do.”

“There is always something we could have done,” Sophia countered.

Jace turned to them. “Maya’s right. The Touri in that habitat knew what to expect. They had been preparing for it for years.”

“That still doesn’t justify letting them die,” Kyda said. “There were so many of them in that habitat.”

“Billions more are going to die if we had gotten captured trying to save the Touri,” Jace said.
